Software Configuration Management is at the core of software development. It controls and documents all requirements and changes of a software system.
We commonly distinguish the following subsections of SCM:
- identification of configuration items
- storage
- change control
- status reporting
Properly set-up configuration management facilitates rapid and simple acquisition of information and artefacts, minimizing time spent on conception and development, making the software development traceable and less error-prone. In effect, good configuration management provides a meaningful development status that is traceable at any given time.
